INDEPENDENT CASE STUDIES
You should have completed your US studio case study and also have detailed case study for British or US independent films too. If you are still working on the latter here are some suggestions.
Go to FROG and check out the G322 Film Audience and Institution site - good companies to look at include, Warp, BFI, Film Four Productions, BBC films. BIFA - also useful as it shows previous successful films and recent award nominees. BAFTA also useful. Aras to consider: How do independent films find finance? What is the budget range? Why is casting crucial? How do they find an audience? What are the limitations, barriers to box-office success? Also check out BFI for research into independent films. There is a lot to useful and highly relevant information available. In addition you can check out a range of other sites as well. IT IS ALL THERE FORE YOU. |

cw - editing, evaluation and updating
Well done! Many of you have completed your first edit, some of you have exported to Youtube and others have also embedded on their Weeblys. By Wednesday of next week, I hope that all of you will have a first edit on Weebly.
In addition you will have next to it a brief evaluation of your edit which identifies what you need to do to improve the edit: adding titles, developing sound, reviewing all the choices of shot and the decisions about when to cut, colour grading. Some of you may then work on the next edit.
As you do not get any taught lesson time next week you will need to be very pro-active in making time during study periods and after school on Monday and Tuesday to work in C1. I am also happy for you to work here on Thursday P4, 6 and 7. As always you will need to be very self-disciplined as you will be unsupervised and should you fail to maintain a focussed and purposeful environment you may not be allowed to work unsupervised in the future.
Exam work:
ESSAY: Please can you type up the representation essay and email it to me by next Monday.
CASE STUDIES: Also prepare/develop your case studies using the materials shared with you at the BFI study day, your own notes from the day, the course booklet I gave you and using information from FROG. Please add this to your HW weebly on the Flipped Learning page.
CW DEADLINES: For deadlines see the presentation below. For additional details about HW see slides to the BELOW.

FINALISED FILM OPENING PROJECTS
Georgiane, Zara, Zaynab, (Najma)
Time-slip Thriller |
Usman, Kavita, Chloe, Nassime
Crime Thriller |
Lily, Bayaan, Whitney
Vampire Horror |
Now that we have settled on each film project here are the basic instructions for your next steps towards producing your film opening.
The following site may be of use for contracts and forms.
- organisation: set up a shared drive (google drive or similar) for all your resources and shared materials, you will need to collaborate so if you share scripts using google drive you can set permissions so that others in your group can re-write and collaborate, make sure that you have robust form of communication which all members of the group can use (WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter, other forms of social media - rule of respect apply to all communications).
- roles: identify each team members roles and responsibilities.
- research: do research into the genre of your chosen project, choose at least 3 films which are in the same genre. Analyse their opening sequences, titles, all media languages. In addition, make a clear list of the conventions of the genre, the iconography one should expect, the codes of the genre which are expected and use this research to support your development of the next stage of the scripting and storyboarding process.
- planning: script writing - write a 1 paragraph treatment/story of the opening sequence, write a 2-3 page script for the opening sequence (minmal dialogue). Share with your team using your collaborative organisation. Visit and photograph potential locations, draw up flat-plans or overheads for each location to help with identifying camera angles - share. Draft storyboards for each scene. Draw-up lists for costume, set, props, make-up, exquipment (camera and lighting) - identify all sources and costs. Draft schedule for pre-prodcution and shoot.
- Pre-production: test shooting in locations, test lighting, test make-up or any special effects or stunts, write Risk Assessment for shoot identifying any risks and showing how these will be minimalised, casting of actors to play characters in your film opening (video casting is good evidence), research and create contracts for actors and locations. Complete animatic for film opening including test titles. Confirm all locations and cast and finalise shcedule and call sheets for all filming days. Test equipment.

COMPLETING WORK for next wednesday
Ensure that you have completed all your tasks by next Wednesday. That means that I should be able to see everything on your Weebly on Tuesday evening by 7pm. PLEASE.
In addition: you must prepare for the FILM PITCH COMPETITION - this is what you have been waiting for. Everyone will get 3mins to pitch their film idea to the class. You should include: a 25 word pitch, the basic storyline, the genre, your idea for the first 2 minutes, any visuals you would like us to see which will help sell us your idea. We will be voting on this and make a collective decision about the 3 (or possibly 4) films openings which will be made. Things which are very important when making choices:
In addition, prepare for the Exam after Christmas by reading the exemplar I gave out in class. Those without, I have put a copy of it here to download. Also get notes from today's lesson on Media Ownership from those who attended the class. |

advance warningAfter half term we will be accelerating the progress in both practical and theoretical development. Our first and most important date is the BFI TRIP on Wednesday the 2nd of November. Please make sure that you bring your slips in and payment TOMORROW FRIDAY THE 14TH OF OCTOBER.
The lessons on Friday the 4th of November will be split between consolidation of the trip learning, teaching to those who could not come (because of an exam) and preparation for the next practical. Our next practical exercise is called MASTERSHOT and is another group exercise (different groupings). As I explained last lesson it is a single shot film which will help you develop your skills in planning developing shots, handheld, blocking to camera, lighting and experimentation. IT IS ALSO A LOT OF FUN! Here you can see some excellent examples of single developing shots to give you inspiration. |

SPRING 2 - WEEK 1
The deadline for your finished edits is Tuesday the 8th of March. At this point during lessons 3&4 we will be completing a review of the work including your research and planning on the blogs. You must therefore ensure that you have your edit finished with all elements in place including titling, sound and colour grading, also that you work on organising and completing all research and planning and posting this onto your Weebly. Your DP4 grade will depend heavily on this and your PPE exam mark. In addition you should begin preparing for the evaluation questions which I will post below. You can review previous year's work on this by following the links on FROG. It would be a very good idea for you to see the good the bad and the ugly of evaluations BEFORE you attempt your own.
Final deadline for completion of evaluations has been extended to the beginning of the Summer term giving you plenty of time. See the schedule below for the next few weeks of lessons.

WEEK 6 - POST PRODUCTION - EDITING
We are about 3 weeks behind schedule and this will put some pressure on you to complete your edits after school or during study sessions. In light of this I have made arrangements for a session on Thursday the 18th of February from 12 till 3.30pm. All should attend. I know about two of you who might have trouble with this from yesterday's class.

To support you there will be after school catch-up sessions on:
C1 is also available and accessible for CW at the following times so check how these match with your timetable.

I have taken a look at your blogs and with some notable exceptions there are a few common areas of improvement.
Research: Most of you have less research into feature film production, distribution and exhibition than you need. Most of you also show very little evidence of analysis of opening sequences from which you have extracted the conventions which you will apply, challenge or develop. I would like to see more of you showing research into directors, camerawork and lighting and also the use of titling and sound. Planning: When it comes to planning, there are some good examples of script development and if a some cases, also evidence of scheduling and animatics. However, most lack extensive detail. The production planning is vital both for the success of your productions and also for your evidence when it comes to marking. Making sure that you have: risk assessed your filming and locations is vital, having photos: before and after set dressing is a very good idea and really shows how you will use your creative skills. Storyboards and shot lists are essential, as well as cast and prop lists. Daily call sheets and all the other planning which I have guided you through. Feedback: Some of you have made your feedback page usable for me by posting "Feedback...?" or something similar which I can use comments to give you individual remarks, but not everyone has posted something so I cannot comment on everyones. ACTIONS: Additional ongoing CW requirements.

I have noticed on at least one student's site research which is being put forward as their own but which is PLAGIARISED, coming from an internet source. This lazy and stupid because it can be easily searched and discovered by myself and therefore by the external moderator as well. If it is found in any students' work within the cohort, if could be serious for everyone's grades, not only the individual student who has cheated. The centre could lose its status. That student would be disqualified from the qualification completely.
If any of you know that you have 'borrowed' text or information from another blog and not referenced it, or passed it off as your own then you have 1 week to remove it and do the work again. Honestly and properly this time. If in 2 weeks time any student is found to be representing work as their own which is plagiarised, then they will be reported to the head of 6th form and further appropriate actions will follow which may include being asked to leave the school. If you are confident about your own work, then you have absolutely nothing to fear. |

HAPPY NEW YEAR
WELCOME BACK.
I hope you all had a good winter break and feel refreshed and ready for the next term. I trust that you all had successful coursework shoots and have completed most of the filming as per your plans. YOU MUST BRING THIS IN TO CLASS ON SD CARD OR HARD DRIVE this Tuesday the 5th as we will be reviewing your film production success (or otherwise) and making plans to deal with any issues that arose. To ensure that all groups are on track to have completed shooting all material by the Monday the 18th of January it is vital that all members of each team are present. In addition, please could you also follow the link to the side to myPLC and use the code given to access the PLC for your AS coursework. Complete the PLC by the end of this week. Any problems with access please let me know ASAP. Note: you can access myPLC through the school dashboard and applications - no need to sign in. AUTUMN 2 WEEK 5
Once again, unfortunately, I cannot be with you at the beginning of the lessons today. However, it is not as if you don't have a great deal to do.
With the planning discuss how the planning supports your production objectives - do you have some images from from other films which are similar to what you want to achieve - examples of lighting, of camera work, of set or costume design? What about locations and or sets? Probably you will be location based, so where, when and why?
Discuss you storyboard and screenplay for the opening - are the shots you have planned the right ones, what other ways could you film it?
If you are struggling to come up with ideas try this exercise.
I WILL WANT TO SEE CLEAR EVIDENCE OF ALL OF THE ABOVE WHEN I ARRIVE.
- Research - see HW1
- Planning - see HW2

See the presentation for full details, the mark scheme for research and planning and the videos on filming which I hope you will find useful. I have also added the foley video you watched the other day. You need to formulate a strategy for each area with research that leads to specific planning. The areas of development and production are:
Think about interesting ways of researching including the use of video, animation, podcast, etc. HW - this is ongoing for the next 2 weeks except for the following All groups will need to have completed a new detailed Scene by Scene treatment for their opening sequence by next Tuesday. Show evidence of research into specific areas. Explain what means they are using to share research.

GENERAL FEEDBACK FROM WEEBLY
Having taken a look at some of your weeblys there are some good examples and some areas of development as I would expect. One important thing for all of you is to make a feedback blog page AND put a first post on it asking for feedback. Another is the inconsistency of HW completion - some of you are assiduous about completing work and posting - others are very lackadaisical. There are many gaps a these tend to indicate a gap in knowledge or understanding. Fill them please. MANAGING YOUR WEEBLYEnsure that your weebly includes the following pages:

pitchingWell done to all of you who pitched ideas. The results of the pitching and vote were as follows:
My thoughts on your pitches and plans run as follows and you should think about this when you go through the crewing up process and also when considering if the ones that were voted for are the ones we should make. The next step is development and you should all want to ask lots of questions about each project and how it will be made. The more ideas you bring to it and the more you find out, the more confident you will all feel about each. Some thoughts: Maryam's idea - very visual, some possibilities for clear genre signifiers if well written and planned. Lots of care with mise en scene - blood, bicycle etc. Very 'indy', lots of interesting production challenges Beth's idea - a good basic structure and concept, simple but quite satisfying and recognisable. Will rely on careful but clever writing, filming and editing. Cross-over scenes between characters introductions. Molly's idea - also a complete film idea with a clear sense of what it is, making the opening clear enough in genre terms will rely on excellent 'seeding' of narrative and possibly back story. How to make it really engaging. Sade's idea - paranormal is a bold genre and one which can be exciting and technically challenging - how will it be established, how can we make this original and get away from the game? Lighting, sound, camerawork and location all vital for success. BE BRAVE - if you are not convinced by an idea, offer alternative ideas and start the development process - the next step is collaboration. |
BY THE END OF FRIDAY

Autumn 2 Week 1 |
Please find the HW and GRI in the presentation opposite. Below is a link to FROG - the image show the tab highlighted in GREEN. On this tab you will find lots of examples to watch and test yourself PLUS some exemplars to read and break down. I have added this to your HW requirements.
Next week we will be using Friday P6&7 for exam preparation. The exam the following week will take place on the Tuesday P1&2 - there will be some element of 'walking talking' approach in the note taking to support your doing well. |

WEEK 6
HW1 (due Tues)
Complete research task for HW1 and post to your Weebly on the research page. Questions to answer:
HW3 (due Fri)
We are moving towards developing your ideas for the opening sequences. Though as yet we have not decided upon a genre. For this first writing exercise, I would like you to write the Pitch (25 words of less) and Synopsis (300-500 words) for a new feature film for a specific audience. The choice of genre is yours. The title is: The End of the Line In addition, write a detailed description of the opening scene(s) of the film. Make this visual and aural. The genre must be clear and you will need to present your pitch to the class.
|
HW2 (due Tue)
On Tuesday we will be doing a Mastershot Exercise which will involve creating a sequence in 1 shot with a number of events. This will test camerawork, organisation and creativity. Write an idea for your mastershot sequence - can include storyboard, or shot list for movement. Rules:

WEEK 5
We were very under powered on Friday with 6 people missing due to absence and a trip which meant that we couldn't do everything we wanted to. So instead we looked at opening sequences using Art of the Title and also the openings made by last year's students which we discussed.
HW1 In preparation for next week you should ensure that your evaluations of your Preliminary Exercises are completed and uploaded in whichever form you choose onto your Weebly. This can be a 9 frame analysis, prezi, video and voice over or another form. PLEASE FOR YOUR OWN SAFETY ENSURE THAT YOU MAKE A BACK UP COPY OF ANY WORK YOU MAKE. This is why you shouldn't just type into Weebly apart from your blog and titling for new items etc. It is always better to use the document, youtube, embed widgets rather. HW2 Research the Development, Production ,Distribution, Exhibition route. Using Prezi or Powtoons or another online presentation tool briefly explain the journey from Script development - through Production to Distribution and Exhibition. You may LOOK at presentations already created online BUT look at several to ensure accuracy and then MAKE YOUR OWN. |
WEEK 4
HW1
Evaluate your Prelim Exercise to date
Ensure that you have completed HW analysis of opening sequence titles and credits
|
HW3
Using the site to the right find 3 title sequences you like and be prepared to explain your reasons. You might find it a good idea to blog about it. |
